How to support your child's inner gifts and creativity.

All children have some type of inner gift. Encouraging the development of that gift builds a foundation of inner strength, and confidence to achieve anything.

Exploring their creativity and inner gifts literally opens your children up to an amazing world of possibilities that exist for them. The most important thing you can do as a parent is to tune into your Kids. They want you to show excitement in their interests. They want you to support them and watch them and encourage them.

All children have some type of inner gifts. Whether it is drawing, writing, making people laugh, or something else, children need to explore this inner gift. The way they do that is through creative activities and exploration of their ideas and interests. Sometimes, all they need is a little support to help those inner gifts come to life.

Here's how you can help:

1. Plug into your Kids. Be a part of their lives. Get to know them - the real "them" and not just the mask they show you. Spend one on one time with them and ask them questions - not to judge what they are doing, but to show interest in what they are doing.
2. Find out what interests your child. What do they dream of doing - what do they imagine themselves doing when they are fantasizing or daydreaming about their future. This may be different than what you have witnessed. Be open to what they tell you. Always encourage their dreams.
3. Find out how you can help them succeed. What can you do to support them? There are many means of support, emotional, physical, financial, find out where you can best fit into their ideas.
4. Remember that whatever idea your child comes up with to support THAT idea. Don't make it your own. Don't guide it to be what you think it should be. They need to explore their own ideas and creativity. You are there to be their goto person when they need help.
5. Remember that there is no bad idea, no wrong art, and no wrong creativity. It is so important not to squelch your child's ideas and dreams by saying things like, "That's not the way it's suppose to look", "That can never happen" or "You can never make a living doing that".
6. Be careful not to tarnish your child's perception by what has happened in your life. Children naturally believe that anything is possible and they create from that assumption. When they are allowed to continue to create from that assumption, anything truly is possible.
7. Encourage your child's creativity by doing creative activities with them and by sharing ideas and gifts that encourage those inner talents.

Holidays are a great time to reconnect with your Kids. Here are few activities to get you started:

Holiday Activities

1. Make your own holiday cards: find some paper you can use for your cards. Next, use photos, magazines cut-outs, drawings, colorings, stickers, computer graphics - whatever you want to create your cards. Have fun creating your own holiday cards for your friends and family.
2. Make your own family board game - use an existing game as your inspiration or create a new one with your own rules. Find a heavy piece of cardboard (like from a box) and then cut out your board. Glue white paper on the cardboard (to create your board's face) or just draw right on the cardboard. Have fun and be creative creating your board's face. Use pics, drawings, coloring, cut outs, etc. of your choice. Find fun game pieces or create some with stuff you have lying around the house.
3. Make your own ornaments/mobiles - use cardboard, construction paper, styrofoam, anything you might have lying around the house. Decorate with colored paper, pics, drawings, beads, stickers, etc.
4. Make a fun family collage - collect some fun photos you have of the family - add color, stickers, drawings, sayings - whatever you want to make your collage.

There are many ways to connect with your Kids during the holidays. Just find something that interests them and create an activity around it. It doesn't have to be hard or take up a lot of time. Make it fun and easy so that it won't feel overwhelming.

Find activities year round that you can enjoy and explore with your children and watch how it changes your relationship with them and their relationship with themselves. Taking an interest in their interests shows them that you care about who they are and their choices in life. Building a bond like that is priceless, for you and your child.
